Thousands of micro pins dynamically raise and lower forming a tactile surface for all to get touchy with. Sighted people get the elusive tactile feedback they’re missing with ordinary touch-screens and blind people get a whole new interface made of braille.

MIT's smart device turns any surface into a touchscreen

Using a webcam, battery-powered projector, and mobile phone, the device acquits itself like a portable Microsoft Surface display built from $300 worth of consumer-grade hardware. The interface is generated by the phone which is in turn projected onto nearly any surface, and the camera is used to recognize gestures that interact with that projection.

NECs Language interpreter for phones

The company says its software can take words spoken into a phone’s mic and translate both ways between Japanese and English in real time without recourse to a network connection to a server, displaying the result as onscreen text.
